Making Teddies

Since Theo is interested in clothing and how it is made, I thought it would be fun to learn to sew and work on a project of our own. Once my grandma's old sewing machine is fixed up, we will work on making our own clothes with that. For now, I googled simple projects a 6 year old can make, and found this teddy bear pattern

I took a sewing class for grown-ups a few weeks ago, and had to get materials, so I got all the things needed for the bear on that trip to Jo-Ann's. Theo picked out the fabric he wanted and a few days ago we hunkered down to make the bears. It would have been WAY easier on the sewing machine, and would have produced a more polished result as well, but we had fun and the boys are happy with their bears.

Yes, those are Christmas pj's and yes it is March.

Fred and Forest needed clothes (apparently) and so we hunted up some old Cabbage Patch doll clothes I had packed away.

In other news, Theo continues to enjoy his science and PE coop. They just finished up a forensics unit, complete with DNA extraction (we still have his little vial of it, ew) and a "real-life" (read: staged by the teacher) crime. She had a couple of older kids burst into the kindergarten class and "steal" a very precious book. Theo was so utterly delighted by the robbery (although one little girl in class cried and made the teacher promise it would never happen again). Their next unit is mammals.

I backed off making him practice reading, and guess what happened? He started asking if he could practice reading! Whaddaya know. Now, most nights he picks an early reader and reads it to us. That has been really fun!

  1. The bears are really cute! What a great idea. The boys are so creative and Dressing the teddy bears seemed perfect to me. I’m going to Michael’s tomorrow and am going to look for teddy bear clothes. Sewing brings such a wonderful new creative dimension to life. The things you now have time to do together with them both at home are just never ending. The pictorial was fun to see!
